Yarn Donations Needed Now!!!

We had a teacher come in on Sunday and introduce herself.. Her name is Kathy and she teaches at Piedra Learning Center in Bayfield. Her students are working on crochet projects to send to needy and homless children in Afghanistan. What a GREAT thing to do not only for her kids at school, but for the children in Afghanistan. They've gotten quite a bit of items finished up, but they are running our of donated yarn. If you have any scrap or unwanted yarn that could be used for this Special Cause you may drop it by Yarn or you may contact Kathy directly! Please make an effort to support this cause, especially for CHILDREN who have no control over their circumstances!

Here is a bit from Kathy herself:
"Hi my name is Kathy Juracka. I am a teacher at Piedra Learning Community School in Bayfield.  Our students are excited about their humanitarian aid project crocheting and loom knitting hats and scarves (working on mittens!) for children in Afghanistan.  We have about 20  items completed, but WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF DONATED YARN!!  If you have any type of yarn ( synthetics, small amount end pieces, what ever) that you could donate to our project it would be so very appreciated.  I have some digital photos of our kids workings on their hats and scarves, and modeling them too if anyone would like to see them.  We are working in conjunction with the davyweavermemorial.org program in Afghanistan.  Thank you so much,
Kathy Juracka

Knitting Tips!

We've had a lot of interest in Ysolda Teague's Urchin Hat, and quite a few knitters that have come in are working on it. We've had a few people get a little stuck with the shorts rows, mostly count and recognizing the finished wraps. Once you get through a few repeats of the "wedges" that compose the hat, it will fly by.. You'll love it!

 urchin2.jpg

I knit my first one up in some Cuzco and it turned out great. It was little baggy and floppy, I forgot that this yarn stretches out quite a bit with wear. So keep that in mind when choosing your yarn. I like mine like this, but if I want a change, I gather it up and attach a vintage pin. Adorable.
I've got 2 more planned, and I think I can finish them up in a day a piece. They really are that easy once you get moving on them.

Come on in and check out our shop model that was knit up in Lumpy Bumpy. Even try it on for size, it looks great on just about everyone!
If you get stuck, you are welcome to come by for a little help, or check out these knitting help links:

http://www.knittingatknoon.com/provisional.html
This is the provisional cast on recccommended in the pattern

Short Rows:
http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/FEATbonnetric.html
http://www.thedietdiary.com/blog/lucia/222
http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=143
http://www.knotions.com/techniques/short_rows/how_to_knit_short_rows.aspx

This hat does call for a Provisional Cast ON and a grafted  bind off, OR 3 Needle Bind Off.
It is knit from side to side, the short rows cause the rounded shape, and the graft makes for a seamless finished piece.
Now, if that is all too much for you, you could very well just cast on and bind of as normal. Then graft, seam, sew or whatever, your two ends together and draw up the center. It just won't be as neat or invisible. And you won't learn a new technique! But if you're OK with that, then go ahead and go the other direction with it.

Anyhow, hope this all helps, and maybe you found something new that you've needed.
Happy Knitting!
- Brandy

What a turn out!

Today was the first day of the "Getting Started Knitting Hats" Class.
We had about 7 ladies attend, and each with a different yarn and each will have a different looking finished hat.

Don't miss out on these classes, they fill up pretty fast, so if you're interested, call and reserve your seat. Basic knitting skills are required, if you do not know how to knit at all, these classes are not for you.
They are not meant to teach a person HOW to knit as a skill - but how to knit a PATTERN.
However if you want to LEARN TO KNIT, call and make an appointment with Kate for a Private Lesson.  Perhaps in just couple lessons, you just may be ready to knit a hat, and you can get in on one of these classes!

Look what's back!

Well, the YarnDurango blog is back, it's been so long!

I'm Brandy, and Kara recruited me to get a few things up and running again, and this blog is one of my new tasks! From now on, this will be THE ONE blog you go to for ALL the info Yarn puts out. The old blogs are officially dead, so stick it right here cause you're in the right place!

AND...
How about the snow?! Snow arrived in Durango about a month earlier than it did the last 2 years. I don't know about you, but I wasn't ready for snow yet and I have a sudden urge to knit my fingers off! If you're feeling like I do, and you haven't come in lately then stop by. We have new yarn coming in weekly - almost daily - and we have lots of patterns and books to choose from.

Here's one of the new books we received recently, and it's adorable! The author is an amazing knitter and designer!

http://craftside.typepad.com/.a/6a00e55007f593883401156fb7d580970b-pi

Ok, moving on!
We'll be posting regularly, listing classes, events and even new orders of yarns we've received. I know, it's been so long, it might be a lot to process all at once, but don't forget us! Remember to check back in, and please leave comments. Tell me how you like the new blog, and the new look that will soon emerge, and if you want to see something or need some info, COMMENT! I'll respond every day that I am in the shop, which is about 3-4 days a week. Let me know what you think, I'll be posting all the shop info you will ever need, and maybe a few fun things as well.

Hope you enjoy, and Happy Knitting!
